| First we'll start with the incessant babbling. A not-so-brief history of my career as a country dancing groupie/devotee. Then we can go on to the good stuff! | ![]() |

Everyone who knows me will tell you that I am a dancing fool. When my favorite male companion suggested that we take
ballroom dance lessons so we might be able to dance together at a friend's wedding, I was happy to try. I enjoyed the experience
so much, my companion and I made it a regular practice to get dressed up and join the old folks ballroom dancing at one of the hotels
downtown. He was a great partner, and although I was still a novice, I felt like Ginger Rogers in his arms. When my friend Kate suggested that we take country line dance lessons, I was less than eager. I was not a fan of country music. As Kate is so eager to point out, I am the one who said, at the height of his popularity, "Garth Brooks should be shot." I imagine it was my tiredness of seeing his face plastered everywhere that caused that remark. Against my better judgement, I accompanied Kate to a lesson at what was then called Murphy's Country Palace, a dive-y bar in East Baltimore. I brought my ballroom dance partner along for the ride. Lucky decision that was, for it was couples lesson night. He and I took the lesson, which was for some confounded arm position for the two step which soon reduced us to human pretzels. And without the fun of a Twister mat. Later, we jumped in and tried a dance called the El Paso, a cha-cha couples dance. The song we danced to was "Neon Moon", by Brooks and Dunn.

Kate and I checked the bar's schedule and decided to come back again on a night when there would be a line dance lesson. I am not exactly sure, but I do
think that lesson was for the Dance Ranch Romp. The instructor knew what she was doing and the dance was fairly simple to pick up. And...it was fun! Kate and I soon became addicted to dancing. We went to the Country Palace several times a week. Back in those days, they had live music Thursday through Sunday. More often than not, the Four by Four Band was playing. They seemed to understand the needs of the dancer, for they counted off each song, and even told us what dances might be done to it. We became "groupies", that is, we began to follow the band to gigs other than those at the Palace. |

I was learning new dances right and left. Kate and I sat down at some point a few years back and listed at least 80 dances that we had learned. Not only was I
learning how to dance, I also was making new friends. The guys in the band were teriffic, and so were their wives and other family members. We have remained close ever since. And....believe it or not, all that listening to country music caused me to have an appreciation of it. Actually, I like it now! And I have a terrible secret to tell: I own a Garth Brooks disc. *sheepish smile* |
