Ah, the days of the cocktail hour are long gone! Certainly, there are still some people who take time for a libation between getting home from work and having a nice dinner, but more often than not, this is referred to as "happy hour." Oftentimes, this "hour" stretches into three and is more of an excuse to get rowdy and partake in greasy bar-food-type yummies than to relax.

Some may choose to argue with me on that point. "Relaxation" is a relative term.

Although many traditional drinks such as the Manhattan and the Martini are still popular, new drinks are being invented every day. On this page I have given recipes for some of the most intriguing new drinks, as well as an old standard, the Margarita (my favorite drink!)

Two friends of mine, by Andree Warhol

As you might have already noticed, the rule in drink-naming seems to be: use a name outrageous enough to potentially embarass the person ordering the drink. Or at least give his or her drinking companions the wrong idea.

"Bartender, I would like to have an Orgasm, please"

(snicker)

Depending on the establishment, this would usually be a drink order ;)

If you have a recipe for an interesting new drink, please e-mail it to me and I might include it on this page. I'll have to taste-test it first to see if it passes muster...

Something as mundane as beer has also entered the realm of the exotic recently. In addition to the traditional ale, porter, stout, and lager, there are now red beers and fancy fruit-flavored beers hitting the market.

I had a lovely apricot beer in Seattle a few years back. I wish I remembered what brewery it came from. Recently, I had a Saranac Winter Wassail which was quite yummy. It had overtones of cinnamon and nutmeg and other wintery spices.

Purists would gag at the thought, I am sure. But then a "purist" probably drinks Bud Lite, too.
